February 25, 2022 - Dancing With Danger

I came across a bird sitting in the path, upon closer inspection through my lens I realized it was a Red-Shouldered Hawk. I was curious, whenever they are on the ground, it is usually with good reason- they are usually eating or at least pulling their meal apart. This one was acting differently though, it was literally tip toeing around, being careful with each move. Then I saw why… its intended prey was a venomous Florida Cottonmouth (also known as a Water Moccasin). After a few attempts the hawk moved on, probably realizing it is indeed better to live to fight another day.
